At Badley Ashton we can use our wide variety of petrographical and reservoir quality analysis techniques, along with our wide experience to help solve any number of exploration, development and production issues.

Analysis commences with sample selection, perhaps one of the most important yet underappreciated aspects of any analytical program, which leads to robust data collection and then detailed integration with sedimentological and petrophysical datasets.

The techniques employed by Badley Ashton include:

Pore scale analysis for clastic reservoirs

  • Focused sample selection
  • Modal and textural analysis
  • Touchstone compliant data acquisition and analysis
  • Detailed thin-section descriptions
  • Scanning electron microscopy (SEI/BSEM/SEMCL)
  • X-ray diffraction (Whole-Rock and Clay-Fraction)
  • Cathodoluminescence (CL)
  • Fluid inclusion analysis (FI)
  • Provenance and pore system evaluation via detailed characterisation of rock composition, texture and diagenesis

Authigenic, grain-rimming microcrystalline quartz

Pore-scale analysis for carbonate reservoirs

  • Focused sample selection
  • Modal analysis
  • Detailed thin-section description
  • Microfacies analysis
  • Scanning electron microscopy (SEI/BSEM/SEMCL)
  • X-ray diffraction (Whole-Rock and Clay-Fraction)
  • Cathodoluminescence (CL)
  • Fluid inclusion analysis (FI)
  • Stable isotope analysis
  • Characterisation, quantification and origins of the pore network and diagenetic phases
  • Rock typing

High-Resolution Thin-Section Imaging (HRTSI)

  • High-resolution imaging of whole thin-sections in plane-polarised and cross-polarised light creating a permanent and easily accessible digital archive for collaboration purposes and image analysis techniques.
  • A single image of the whole sample with ability to zoom in without pixellation.
  • Finely calibrated to allow for micron-precision measurements.
  • Image output as uncompressed TIF and compressed JPG format, compatible with any image software.
  • Ability to conduct Petrographic Image Analysis (PIA) techniques to provide detailed additional data on your thin-sections
