Petrographic Image Analysis - Badley Ashton a global solution to integrated geological reservoir description

Petrographic Image Analysis (PIA)

Badley Ashton is pleased to announce our Petrographic Image Analysis (PIA) suite. This allows us to offer an end-to-end service, analysing everything from our own high-resolution thin-section scans to core, SEM and CL images. Image Analysis has rapidly become an industry-standard method of data collection and analysis, favoured for both the quick turnaround compared to conventional techniques, and the higher density of the data gathered.

Macroporosity Image Analysis

One common usage of Image Analysis is derived from analysing the pore spaces within thin-sections. In order to do this, a 'tiled' super-image of a complete thin-section is captured with a 4x objective using our own automated microscopy equipment. This image is finely calibrated, allowing for accurate measurement to micron scale. Pore space data, typically identified by blue-stain resin, are then gathered in software. These data include detailed information on each individual pore, including longest axis, perimeter length, area, aspect and roundness ratio. Analysis of this dataset builds into a semi-quantitative breakdown of the pore network seen in thin-section.

The derivation of statistical data on pore networks can yield the following quantitative information, which can be used to constrain and differentiate potential rock-types:

- Total percentage porosity,
- Pore size distribution charts,
- Pore system statistics by lithotype/lithofacies and facies association.

These data types can help to establish a link between rock types and pore geometries with geological parameters, such as rock texture and diagenesis, which will be comparably well constrained in 3D static models compared to rock types. Generating such links is vital for decreasing uncertainty when predicting and modelling reservoir behaviour in the interwell areas.
